Common Anaesthetic Treatment Options
General Anaesthesia

Under a general anaesthetic, you will be unconscious and unable to feel pain during your surgery or procedure. It’s like being in a deep, dreamless sleep, and you will wake up with no memory of the procedure. I will closely monitor your vital signs and ensure your safety throughout the entire process. General anaesthesia is often employed for complex surgical procedures and provides complete unconsciousness and pain relief, allowing for the safe and pain-free execution of lengthy and invasive operations.
Local Anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia is a type of anaesthetic that numbs a small, specific area of your body where you’ll have your surgery or procedure. You’ll be fully awake and aware, and the anaesthesia is applied to ensure you won’t feel any pain or discomfort in that localised area. Local anaesthesia is often used for minor surgeries and allows patients to communicate and cooperate during the procedure. For instance, it may be used during a dental procedure or for minor skin surgery.
Regional Anaesthesia

Regional anaesthesia numbs a specific area of your body, like an arm or a leg, so you won’t feel pain during your surgery or procedure. You’ll stay awake and aware, but you won’t feel any discomfort in the targeted area. I will carefully administer the anaesthesia and monitor you to ensure your comfort and safety. An epidural is an example of regional anaesthesia and is commonly used to block pain signals in the lower half of the body, making it an effective choice for pain control during childbirth or lower extremity surgeries.
Sedation Anaesthesia

Sedation anaesthesia involves the use of medication to help you relax and feel drowsy during your surgery or procedure. Sedation is a spectrum of consciousness from awake but relaxed through to deeply asleep where you will not remember anything about your procedure. It is used to reduce anxiety and discomfort, and offers a comfortable and stress-free experience for various medical treatments, including colonoscopies and endoscopies.

General Information
Anaesthesia in Australia
Australia’s anaesthetic training program is one of the most comprehensive, rigorous and respected globally, with a minimum of five years of training after completing medical school and internship and residency years. This means that Australia is one of the safest places in the world to undergo anaesthesia. Some of the most common anaesthetic treatment options include General Anaesthesia, Regional Anaesthesia, Local Anaesthesia and Sedation or Twilight Anaesthesia.

Anaesthetic Specialisations
Obstetric and Gynaecological Anaesthesia
I have a special interest in obstetric anaesthesia with an appointment as a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) at the Royal Women’s Hospital, as well as participating in elective and emergency obstetric anaesthesia care at Epworth Freemasons, Frances Perry House and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals. I have also worked as a specialist anaesthetist at Western Health, and developed the epidural competency program for anaesthetic trainees during this time.
I find obstetric anaesthesia truly satisfying as it allows me to play a crucial role in ensuring the comfort and well-being of mothers during childbirth, contributing to a positive and memorable experience for women and their family at this special time.
